Purpose and Overview
Using Benner‘s Stages of Clinical Competence, you will examine three of your recent clinical practice experiences to assess and document your level of clinical competence.
Directions
Benner’s theory has a broad-ranging application to nursing. The specific purpose of the theory is general, and applies to the continuum of nurses in every aspect of practice. Benner’s Novice to Expert theory has been implemented in nursing practice, research, and education.
After reviewing the readings on Benner’s Stages of Clinical Competence, complete the following:
• Select any three of Benner’s Seven Domains of Nursing Practice listed below to describe a recent experience that relates to the domain you selected:
1. Helping Role
2. Teaching/Coaching
3. Diagnostic/Monitoring
4. Management of Rapidly Changing Situations
5. Administering and Monitoring Interventions
6. Monitors and Ensures the Quality of Practice
7. Organizational and Work Role Competencies
Note: Benner’s Generic Domains of Practice can be adapted for use in all areas of nursing.
• Describe an experience for each Domain of Nursing Practice you selected.
o Identify your competence level using Benner’s Levels of Proficiency (i.e., novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, or expert practitioner);
o To help you describe your experiences, review the exemplars for each domain of practice provided in chapters 4 -10 (Benner, 2001);
o In describing the three experiences, use the appropriate criteria to outline the description of your experience, and to validate your level of competence. For example, criteria for the level of Expert Practitioner includes extensive experience, instantaneous grasp of most salient features of a situation, and professional instincts that lead to intuitive decision making and judgment. Expert Practitioners anticipate the unexpected, will still use analytical skills to process info in new situations, perform fluidly and effortlessly, and are respected by physicians.
• Explain why your behaviors demonstrate the level or stage of competence you defined. If your behaviors are not at the Expert Level, describe what you would need to do to advance to the next level.
• Use the Benner Competency APA template for this paper.
• Name your file correctly (e.g., NUR-445 Final Analysis Paper Smith).

Here in the introduction, you can state the three domains that you will address. At the end of the paragraph, say: The purpose of this paper is to… In the following sections, you need to describe an experience for each Domain of Nursing Practice you selected. See below–do not change the format of the headings.
Domain #1: State the Name
In this section, you need to describe a recent experience that relates to the first domain you chose. You need to address these three things in this section that relates to this domain:
1. The experience
2. Your stage of practice related to the experience using Benner’s Levels of Competence (i.e., Novice, Advanced Beginner, Competent, or Proficient, or Expert practitioner).
3. Explain why your behaviors reflect Benner’s criteria at your level of competence (e.g., extensive experience, professional instincts, etc.). It is fine if your behaviors do not meet Expert criteria! Do describe what you would do to advance to that level. If you already function at the Expert level, explain what you would do to maintain that level.
You do not need separate headings, just be sure to address all the content.

Conclusion
Every formal paper ends with a conclusion, but this doesn’t have to be a long one. You don’t need to say “in conclusion” because your heading says that.
