Case Study Grading Rubric


This rubric provides a framework for evaluating case study assignments based on several criteria. Each criterion will be graded on a point scale, and the total score will reflect the overall quality of the student’s work. The breakdown below highlights the areas of assessment.


Grading Criteria:

  1. Analysis of the Case (30%)
    • Exceptional (27-30 points): Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the case; the analysis is insightful, well-organized, and covers all key aspects. The student identifies relevant issues and provides an in-depth analysis of the case using appropriate concepts, theories, and evidence.
    • Proficient (23-26 points): Shows a solid understanding of the case; the analysis is clear and covers most key aspects. The student identifies the major issues and uses relevant theories or evidence to analyze the case.
    • Satisfactory (20-22 points): Provides a basic understanding of the case; the analysis is somewhat clear but lacks depth. The student identifies some issues but misses key aspects or fails to fully explain the relevance of theories or evidence.
    • Needs Improvement (17-19 points): Shows limited understanding of the case; the analysis is superficial, missing key points. The student identifies only a few issues, and the use of theories or evidence is weak or incorrect.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-16 points): The analysis is unclear or missing; the student demonstrates little to no understanding of the case or its key issues.

  1. Application of Theories/Concepts (25%)
    • Exceptional (23-25 points): The student accurately applies relevant theories and concepts to the case, demonstrating a deep understanding of their application. The explanations are well-supported with examples and evidence.
    • Proficient (20-22 points): The student applies theories and concepts correctly but may miss some depth in the explanation. Most points are supported by examples and evidence.
    • Satisfactory (17-19 points): The student makes an effort to apply theories and concepts but lacks depth or clarity. Some examples and evidence are included, but the connection is not always clear.
    • Needs Improvement (15-16 points): The application of theories and concepts is limited or unclear. The student struggles to connect theories to the case and provides minimal examples or evidence.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-14 points): The student fails to apply relevant theories or concepts to the case, with little to no evidence or examples.

  1. Problem Identification and Solutions (20%)
    • Exceptional (18-20 points): Clearly identifies the key problems in the case and provides well-thought-out, feasible solutions. The solutions are creative, realistic, and based on evidence or theory.
    • Proficient (16-17 points): Identifies the key problems and provides good solutions that are practical and evidence-based, though some solutions may lack creativity or thoroughness.
    • Satisfactory (14-15 points): Identifies some problems but may miss key issues. Solutions are basic and lack creativity or evidence but are somewhat realistic.
    • Needs Improvement (12-13 points): Identifies only a few problems, and the proposed solutions are either unclear, unrealistic, or not well-supported by evidence or theory.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-11 points): Fails to identify problems or propose clear solutions. The solutions offered are not feasible or supported by any analysis.

  1. Organization and Clarity (15%)
    • Exceptional (14-15 points): The case study is very well-organized and easy to follow. Each section is clearly labeled, and the arguments flow logically from one point to the next. Writing is clear, concise, and free of errors.
    • Proficient (12-13 points): The case study is well-organized, with only minor issues in flow or clarity. Writing is generally clear, though there may be a few minor errors.
    • Satisfactory (10-11 points): The case study is somewhat organized, but the flow is uneven, and some sections may be unclear. Writing is understandable but has noticeable errors.
    • Needs Improvement (8-9 points): The organization is poor, making it difficult to follow the analysis. Writing lacks clarity and contains multiple errors.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-7 points): The case study is disorganized and difficult to read. Writing is unclear, and errors are frequent, making it hard to understand the content.

  1. Research and Supporting Evidence (10%)
    • Exceptional (9-10 points): The student uses strong, credible, and relevant research to support their arguments. All sources are properly cited and integrated into the analysis.
    • Proficient (8 points): The student uses good research and provides proper citations. Some minor issues with the relevance or integration of sources.
    • Satisfactory (7 points): The student uses some research, but it may not be the most relevant or credible. Citations are present but may contain errors or inconsistencies.
    • Needs Improvement (6 points): The research is minimal, with few sources cited or improperly used. Some sources may be irrelevant or unreliable.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-5 points): Little to no research is provided. Sources are not cited, or the sources used are irrelevant or unreliable.

  1. Conclusion and Recommendations (10%)
    • Exceptional (9-10 points): The conclusion effectively summarizes the key points of the case and provides thoughtful recommendations. The recommendations are practical and well-supported by the analysis.
    • Proficient (8 points): The conclusion summarizes the main points well, and recommendations are clear and mostly supported by the analysis.
    • Satisfactory (7 points): The conclusion provides a basic summary but may lack depth. Recommendations are included but are not fully supported by the analysis.
    • Needs Improvement (6 points): The conclusion is weak or unclear, and the recommendations are not well-developed or realistic.
    • Unsatisfactory (0-5 points): The conclusion is missing or does not summarize the case effectively. Recommendations, if present, are unrealistic or unsupported.
